We're very excited to let you know about an upcoming feature that lets you easily manage your ad units from within your AdSense account. It isn't live yet, but here's a sneak peek so you'll know what to expect in the coming weeks. (We know many of you have been eagerly anticipating its arrival.)

This new ad management feature means that your ad unit settings (such as colors and channels) for new AdSense for content ad units will be saved in your AdSense account every time you generate ad code. Then, if you'd like to change any of these settings in the future, all you do is make the update within your account -- you'll no longer need to manually replace the ad code on all of your pages. For instance, you can quickly change the borders of all your 300x250 medium rectangles from red to blue with just a few mouse clicks. Fancy! We hope that this new feature will help you save time and will simplify the process of optimizing your ad units.

As we noted above, please keep in mind that the ad management feature isn't yet available in any publisher accounts. We'll be rolling it out in phases in the next few weeks, and we'll follow up with another post at that time to help you better understand how to use the feature. When you see the "Manage Ads" page appear under your AdSense Setup tab, you'll know the feature is available for you to use.

Advertisers leap into Facebook

ANY day soon, rumour has it, Apple, Coca-Cola, Condé Nast, General Motors, Nike and a host of other world-famous brand names will sign an advertising deal with the hottest company on the planet.

It’s likely to be one of the most talked-about ad deals of the year. The company they are jockeying to sign up with is attracting 200,000 new users a day. Last week it was valued at $15 billion (£7.3 billion), though it has yet to make a profit.

Facebook is a three-and-a-half year old “social network” site that offers people a way of communicating with their friends online. So far, some 50m people have signed up to it. The company says it expects to break even this year.

Last week, Microsoft beat Google to buy a small stake in the firm, valuing it at $15 billion — more than twice as much as British Airways, a company that made a profit of $602m last year.

For some, the deal indicates a return of the “irrational exuberance” that former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan identified in the mid-1990s — an exuberance that ended when the dotcom bubble burst in 2000.

Facebook is the latest in a series of ever-bigger deals for a new generation of so-called web 2.0 companies.

Once again, internet start-ups with lots of buzz — but next-to-no profits — are being snapped up for huge sums by the world’s big media and technology firms.

For others, including Microsoft, the prices are not irrational but a concrete sign of the value of online advertising.

In recent years, internet advertising has soared as advertisers have shifted more and more of their spending from television, newspapers and other traditional media to a host of websites.

Online advertising is now a $16.5 billion business in America, according to Jupiter Research. Shoppers spend 10% of their money online. Compared with mature advertising markets such as TV (worth $74 billion in America), online advertising spending remains small, but it is growing by about 14% a year, and by 2011 it will be worth $32.1 billion.

Only a small slice of this goes to “social network” sites like Facebook and its larger rival MySpace (owned by Sunday Times parent News Corporation).

This year, according to eMarketer, $900m will be spent advertising on social-networking sites in America and $335m elsewhere. The growth of these sites is phenomenal. Facebook believes with Microsoft’s help it can reach 300m users worldwide in the next few years.

“It’s anybody’s guess how big Facebook will get,” said John Delaney, an analyst with the Ovum consultancy. “But 300m doesn’t sound completely ridiculous.”

Other sites with similar features to Facebook and MySpace have failed to take off — the British site Friendsreunited and America’s Friendster have both been left behind. But the success of Facebook and MySpace shows “there is a market for people to interact on the net in a similar way to the way they interact in real life”, said Delaney.

Advertisers, too, are increasingly enamoured of the sites.

Carlton Cribb, the digital buying director at Zed Media, a London ad agency, said clients now see online sites as an intrinsic part of their advertising strategy.

“In the past couple of years there has been a major change from the clients’ perspective,” he said. “Online was kept very separate from the rest of the budget. Now online is another viable medium for reaching their audience — it’s part of the media mix.” A part of the mix that is growing swiftly.

Social networks collect a lot of personal data about their users. People share their taste in music, books, films, their political views as well as their location. All this information can potentially be turned into well-targeted ads. The danger is that users may turn against the “commercialisation” of the sites.

When Google bought YouTube, the video-sharing website, Delaney said there was a lot of complaining from users, many of whom warned the company to stay away from Facebook.

“We heard the same sort of stuff when News Corp bought MySpace. People moan but they still use MySpace. It’s not the first site to put ads on its website. People understand that they get a lot of cool stuff for free on the internet because it carries ads,” he said.

But the internet is a two-way street, and advertisers now have to figure out how to reach an audience that has the power to talk back in a way that was denied them with more traditional forms of ads.

“That’s the promise and also the danger of social networks,” said Delaney. He points to the success of Arctic Monkeys, the indie rockers who built a following on MySpace.

“They were selling their brand. People will engage with you on a very deep level. The problem is that you are not in control of what is out there.”

Some advertisers have stopped using social-network sites, concerned that their ads will come up alongside unsuitable material put up by the sites’ users.

Cribb said these were problems to which the sites and advertisers were now finding solutions in what are still early days for a rapidly changing medium.

When Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg started the site it offered simple web pages for college students to list information about themselves and send messages to friends. Increasingly the site and its rivals offer an array of services, from e-mail to online photo galleries, that have historically existed independently.

The aim is to make Facebook the first port of call for internet users in the way that many people now have Google as their home page.

It’s not a new strategy — AOL tried something similar and failed and Yahoo, which also courted Facebook, has a similar approach. But Facebook has the buzz and the momentum to more than rattle its rivals. As it adds new services, advertisers will be watching developments as closely as Facebook’s users, Google, MySpace and Yahoo.

Unlike the first internet boom, “big media” has in the main fought shy of paying huge prices for online firms. News Corp bought MySpace in 2005 for $649m and more than recouped its investment with an ad deal with Google worth $900m over three years.

For Microsoft the $240m investment is chump change. But it marks a significant evolution for the software giant as it increasingly moves its muscle online. Whether or not Facebook lives up to its $15 billion promise remains to be seen.

Google algorithm tweak spooks WWW

In the brave new world of online media, fortunes can be won and lost on the whim of Google's key search algorithm.

And when, without warning, Google tweaked that mathematical formula this week, there was panic on the world wide web.

Swarms of bloggers and webmasters of major sites like Washingtonpost.com, Forbes.com, Engadget.com and SFGate.com noticed a downgrading in their PageRank, Google's measure of a web page's value.

A site's PageRank impacts not only its ranking in Google search results but also the price it can charge advertisers. A drop in ranking can have serious financial consequences, especially for smaller operators.

The search giant, through its dominant search engine and AdWords/AdSense network, is relied on by millions of websites not only for traffic referrals but for monetisation as well.

Many websites small and large receive over half of their visitors from Google search referrals. And without a sales team to sign advertising deals, most become AdSense affiliates, automatically connecting them with millions of advertisers worldwide.

Ironically, in the ultimate democracy that is the internet, Google reigns as virtual dictator. By changing the way it ranks sites in search results, it has the power to effortlessly shape the digital economy and manipulate the incomes of millions of web businesses around the world.

Yaro Starak, an Australian entrepreneur whose website, entrepreneurs-journey.com, provides tips on starting an internet business, recently announced he had earned $842 from AdSense in September alone. His total advertising revenue from the blog that month was over $10,000, but Starak's ability to continue charging so much is contingent on him maintaining high site traffic, half of which is referred by Google.

"Google controls the income source for a lot of people online, and we're not talking just search traffic we're talking pay-per-click [AdSense] traffic as well," Starak said in an interview.

"Google has both sides of the fence - they've got the publishers, they've got the advertisers and they've got the search traffic, so that's why they're making so many billions of dollars in money each year."

Indeed, a whole industry has spawned with the aim of helping website operators obtain the highest rankings for certain keywords in search engines, and milk the most out of their AdSense accounts.

But small changes to Google's algorithm that determines how high up in search results a site appears can foil any attempts to game the system in a heartbeat. The worst offenders who are caught trying to artificially boost their search ranking are given the "Google death penalty", whereby they're delisted from search results altogether.

Why is credit card interchange costs to merchants going up? The marketplace is close to $60 billion. Each company has continued to raise its prices. Seemed right for revolutionized market.

Could you take those fees, the $60 billion, away from three to five big players and give them back to merchants and consumers.

This business is much bigger than Internet media business and growing at the same rate. For every $100 consumers spend on credit cards, $3 is spent on this business.

Jason: "A few years ago, I listenedd to someone from mastercard -- I call him 'my dad' -- talk about their network." They built these mini-internets. Looked into his wallet: Credit card, debit card, gift cars, was using PayPal. This fragmentation was a by-product of having only private networks. He set out to create a new payment platform from scratch.

The New Ad Network for Facebook Widgets Is...Google Adsense?

Amid the gold rush among startups to launch ad networks to monetize Facebook widgets, VentureBeat points out one intriguing new player: Google.

Microsoft has a lock on Facebook page advertising in the U.S., but Facebook has given third party app developers carte blanche to monetize their own apps using any network they please. To date, startups such as RockYou, Lookery, and VideoEgg have gone for that market full-tilt. Is Google diving in as the fly in their soup?

VentureBeat's Eric Eldon suggests this may be Google's toe in the water as it prepares to announce an open platform for Orkut, its big-in-Brazil social network. He also reports that Google has been courting third-party developers in advance of the announcement.

With the entire Facebook economy in throw-it-at-the-wall mode, it stands to reason that Google—or anyone—would dabble. Tomorrow my Epicenter colleague Bryan Gardiner will collect the dish as he attends the Widget Summit 2007 in San Francisco. Stay tuned.

Yahoo! Does! Adsense! In! Reverse!

Yahoo! today ushered in advertising network deals with three major publishers - Forbes.com, Cars.com and Ziff Davis Media, to add a little sparkle to its Q3 earnings.

The deals represent an unusual twist on the way most advertising networks work e.g. Google or Google - which place bottom feeder ads to soak up the excess inventory of third party publishers. Yahoo! by contrast is offering its own inventory to give page-impression constrained publishers a way of fulfilling bigger campaigns than they could on their own site.

Yahoo! doesn't say how the gig will work out in practice, beyond the fact that affiliates can plunder the entire Yahoo! website to reach their audience targets. The exciting and dangerous way would be to track readers as they move from the publisher websites onto Yahoo! and serve them behaviourally targeted ads commanding premium prices. Exciting? That's the way to make the most money. Dangerous? The cookies would surely crumble into a data protection minefield.

Now for the one minute version: sales were up 12 per cent to $1.768bn (Q3 06: $1.58bn), operating income fell 26 per cent to $150m (Q3 06: $202m), net income eased a little to $151m ($159m). In the analyst conference call, the company noted an uptick in display advertising and announced the nearly finished rollout of Panama, the new advertising system that is supposed to make Yahoo! compete better with Google. Something is working: the company today revealed it has replaced Google to sell ads on the WebMD health site.

Optimizing Instablogs

Instablogs is a blog network that publishes more than 200 posts a day on 136 blogs spanning 16 niche channels, including luxury gadgets blog Bornrich and technology blog Gizmowatch. With 200+ bloggers blogging from all over the world, Instablogs has around 2 million unique visitors per month.

Instablogs co-founder Ankit Maheshwari tells us that AdSense works well with each blog's unique content. “Since our blogs are very niche-oriented, it’s tough for us to sell our inventory directly to advertisers on blogs with less than 30,000 page views per month,” he says. “AdSense’s high CPC offering and huge advertiser database can help monetize the page views on any site irrespective of its size.”

Recently Ankit began to experiment with AdSense optimization. Although he was doubtful of the results, he tried a few minor tweaks on his site, such as opting in to displaying image ads and adding link units to the top of his pages. He also used information from his custom channels to determine the ad unit with the highest CTR on his pages – he then placed this ad unit first in the HTML source of each page. After a week of testing these changes, Ankit found that revenue nearly doubled. While AdSense revenue used to comprise 15% of the company’s advertising revenue, since optimizing it's increased to 25%.

Despite the success of his first optimization, Ankit has found that there isn’t one standard layout or ad format that is optimal for all of his pages. He says, “We’ve seen in many blogs that a few ad types perform better in different sections. For example, the large rectangle performs 70% better on the permalink pages of our Tattoo blog, while skyscrapers perform best on all other pages. At the same time, banner ads have performed really well on our Parenting blog.”

Today, Ankit continues to make small changes and frequently tests new layouts based on his custom channel data. He feels that “custom channels are not only a useful feature, but also the most important feature in the entire AdSense program for publishers.”

Peer-to-peer lending grows online

Anyone who's ever lent a chunk of money to a relative or friend knows it can be a murky proposition fraught with sticky questions and daunting problems.

How much should you lend? Do you charge interest? If so, how much is fair? How long should the borrower get to pay it back? Then there's the unpleasant task of reminding a dawdling dear one that payments are due, not to mention the realization that your "loan" has morphed into a gift.

Enter the so-called peer-to-peer lending business, an emerging arena of financial Web sites that help arrange and manage loans between family members, friends and -- as whacky as it may sound -- total strangers.

The sites all work a little differently, but were founded on a common principle of cutting out the middle man, which helps borrowers get a lower interest rate than they might through traditional sources such as a bank or credit-card issuer.

Instead of making money on the interest rate spread, the sites take their cut solely through fees for arranging and servicing the loan.

At Prosper.com, a San Francisco-based site launched in February 2006 by the co-founder and former chief executive officer of online broker E-Loan, Chris Larsen, borrowers post how much money they're seeking (from $1,000 to $25,000) and the top interest rate they are willing to pay. Potential lenders bid to finance an entire loan, or more typically, pieces of loans. The bids with the lowest rates win.

Prosper collects an origination fee from the borrower ranging from 1 percent to 2 percent of the loan and an annual servicing fee from the lender of between 0.5 percent and 1 percent of the outstanding balance.

The company collects and disburses monthly payments on the loans, which are all made for three years.

"Clearly there is a market for this," said Greg McBride, financial analyst with Bankrate.com, which tracks consumer finance rates and trends.

Borrowers are turning to the sites as an attractive alternative to high-rate credit-card loans, payday loans and other small unsecured loans that many banks won't offer, he said.

Lenders -- basically anyone with a spare $50 -- are attracted by the prospect of earning higher returns than they may get elsewhere, such as in a bank CD.

Another peer-to-peer lending site that arranges loans between strangers, Zopa.com, which was launched in Britain in 2005, has said it plans to begin operating in the United States later this year.

McBride of Bankrate.com said people considering lending their money through peer-to-peer sites should understand the risks.

The big one, of course, is defaults.

"It doesn't matter how great the rate is; if someone is not paying you, you aren't making any money," he said.

Prepayments also can erode returns if the investor is unable to quickly re-lend the money at a similar rate.

For borrowers, "Understand that if you default on a loan, they hire a collection agency to track you down and collect the money," McBride said.

Munich, Germany-based Proximic hopes to do away with random text ads. The startup has a new form of search technology it calls “pattern proximity” that reads information on web pages and then contextually matches that to appropriate content and advertisements.

What's different about Proximic is that it uses a widget, a piece of embedded software for adding those little windows of features. Proximic’s widget matches a particular web page to other content—from the same web site, from news sites, from Wikipedia, and from the across the web—that is constantly updated. The company—founded in 2001 and backed by Munich-based Wellington Partners and Holtzbrinck Group, publisher of Scientific American—announced two major publishing partners Monday: London-based The Independent newspaper and Nature Publishing Group.

While there are a number of contextual matching and discovery services—such as Aggregate Knowledge, Inform, Sphere, and Loomia—Proximic CEO Philipp Pieper says the company’s technology is fundamentally different.

Proximic’s matching technology is different from both Google’s keyword system in its Adsense program, as well as other hot areas like semantic search. Instead of matching an ad based on a particular keyword, Proximic’s algorithm essentially processes the characters on the page, parsing out unrelated content on the page, to provide the best match. The widget also provides relevant ads—using the same matching system—together with the content, under the header “infotizements.”

This on-the-fly processing is independent of the language on the page, allowing Proximic to match nonstandard language such as obscure gamer nomenclature or certain types of slang, Mr. Piepper said. This also allows Proximic to store much less data about each web page, allowing quicker searches, Mr. Pieper added.

The benefit for publishers is more page views within that publisher’s site, as well as better capture of revenue because of higher click-throughs on Proximic’s more relevant ads.

A test of the product on The Independent and Nature web sites produced highly specific results on topics such as Burma and ecology, respectively.

3. The website must not require additional software to load (example: it
cannot be a .pdf instead of .htm).

4. Back button must be able to go back to Google with one click.

5. You can’t have websites that mirror other websites that are advertised for
the same keyword (example: having the same pictures and text but using
a different web address). I know many affiliates do this, but I don’t know
how much Google enforces this rule.

6. The website you are advertising cannot have a pop up or pup under ad.

Another key to having a successful online business is making sure that every single person who is even the slightest bit interested in your product sees your advertisement. The best way to do this is by creating a very huge keyword list (thousands of keywords). Some products have many keywords, while others have very few. Usually the more keywords there are available for the product, the better. Not because it is searched more often, but also because most people who are also selling the same product will only select a few general keywords which may be very broad keywords.

When you bid on Google, you will not always pay the price you enter. The price you enter is the MCPC (Maximum Cost Per Click) you are willing to pay for that keyword. Google constantly updating the bids for the keywords in their search engine. For example if your MCPC is $0.15 and the advertiser in front of you is bidding $0.16 and the Ad one position behind you is bidding $0.05, you will only pay $0.06 per click, because there is no reason why you should have to pay $0.15 per click if you can get the same Ad position for $0.06 per click.

I'm no motivational writer, thank goodness. I can't stand the self-promoting books that are six parts motivational, three parts author ego and, if you're lucky, one part useful tips.They talk vaguely about when you'll be rich and suggest that it'll be soon. Or they throw away suggestion altogether and say you'll be a millionaire in six months. Balls!

So here, I'm going to stick to the useful tips, and I can tell you that, realistically, you should set your expectations to future wealth in 20 to 40 years, and not expect riches in five years. Here are 14 achievable rules that I follow myself which are already leading me to be comfortably rich.

1. Balance the books

Put aside all your money-making ideas and projects until you have your finances in order. You should take in more than you pay each month. If you ignore this rule, your debts will build up faster than you can get rich, and you'll never get rich if you're stressing about debt.

Remember that balancing the books includes saving for big, future expenses, such as holidays, a car and Christmas.

2. Avoid debt

Don't borrow unless you have to. It's no good making more money if you increase your debts alongside it. You must clear your debts so that you can earn interest on your savings, or do things even more productive with it, rather than spend decades paying off debt plus debt interest.

3. Get out of debt, then save, then invest

We pay more in debt interest than we earn in savings interest, so it makes the most financial sense to get out of debt first. Then you can save for emergencies and the future. Finally, when you have this safe cushion, you can invest for bigger returns.

4. Work hard

Most businesses fail, and the majority of investors fail to beat the market. So you are much more likely to get rich by putting extra time and effort into working hard than into spending time picking shares, or even setting up a business.

We have to be realistic and, realistically, there are no easy options. There is no substitute to grafting, which will lead to higher pay (if you ask for it), you'll get noticed for promotions and you'll get good references. You should also work hard to get a better job, or a second job.

5. Track the stock market

When you invest, track the stock market. For anyone investing for ten, 20 or 30 years, the stock market has been remarkably successful for the past 130 years. This method of investing requires little thought, but has out-performed the majority of fund managers over the long term. You can track the market using index trackers or ETFs.

6. Don't fall for get-rich-quick schemes

If you receive an email, letter or phone call foretelling massive riches in no time at all, delete it, bin it, or hang up. Don't think 'But what if, this time, it's true?' because it isn't. Period!

7. Don't gamble

Most gamblers take a long time and spend a lot of money finding out that they'll never beat the bookies and casinos. The odds are stacked heavily against us. It's crazy to bet against the gambling industry. They know how to make profits!

8. Don't buy products with the following words

Guaranteed (although 'guarantee' can be OK), bond, secured or payment protection.

You could break all of my rules and still become rich. You could, for example, gamble a few pounds every now and then, or borrow £1,000 to make an extravagant purchase, although I wouldn't advise it.

However, this rule has more scope for reasonable breakages. These are general rules that apply to perhaps 90% of you. It's certainly a safe bet to avoid products like these if you're unsure. However, there are exceptions. Older investors, for example, might like a steady income from bonds and, occasionally, getting a secured loan is the right decision. It's just that on the whole the products with these words in have too many catches or cost too much.

Remember that names change. Payment protection insurance is still payment protection insurance, even if the lender is calling it 'credit card repayment protection' or 'personal loan protection'.

9. Beware products that are advertised heavily

Sometimes a cheap product is advertised to grab your attention and build brand. However, in finance, this is rare. Any product that you see advertised constantly and aggressively is almost certainly an expensive product, especially if you don't use it properly.

So be very cautious of those products.

10. Be disloyal

Don't be loyal to your bank or insurer, because loyalty is not rewarded. The financial industry is so competitive that providers will offer headline grabbing deals to newcomers, but if you pay attention you'll see that your deal drifts down the best-buy tables and onto the dump, whilst new customers continue to get better deals.

Keep an eye on your deal and the others on offer, and always compare insurance quotes at renewal.

11. Set your expectations

You have to be realistic about your abilities, and accept that multi-millionaire 25-year-olds have had some luck. Most people don't get stinking rich.

If 100,000 people buy Paul McKenna's book 'I Can Make You Rich', how many of them do you think will be worth £10 million in the next 20 years? Not many.

But we can all aim for a gradual growth in our money till we can afford everything we need or want, provided we don't keep dreaming about 15 bedroom mansions, yachts and a fleet of luxury cars. Let go of those thoughts and you'll be a lot happier!

12. Understand compounding

Compounding isn't magic, it's a real and important part in becoming rich, my way.

Here's an example. To keep it dead simple, let's say you just invest £1,000 and that it grows, on average at 7% per year. 7% of £1,000 is £70, so after the first year you have £1,070. However, in the next year you get 7% of £1,070, which is £75.

It doesn't sound like much, but over 30 years you'll have accrued £7,600. Without compounding, it'd be merely £3,100.

Now, if you invested £1,000 every year (£30,000 in total), with the same average returns you'd end up with £200,000!

What you must remember with compounding is that it builds up slowly at first and then in the later years it snowballs. To take advantage of compounding is simple: you must start early.

13. Buy a property

Buying your own home makes a lot of financial sense in the long term. I'm not talking about property investing, I'm talking about having a place to live where, in the end, you need pay no rent or mortgage payments.

This comes with the usual caveats: buy only when you can afford it; make sure you could still afford repayments if interest rates rose a few points; and remember that property prices can go down in the short term, so don't think you can buy and then sell quickly if you've budgeted badly.

If you're following my other rules, you should be able to buy one day.

14. Take the plunge

You can't just sit around if you want to get rich. You need to move with energy, and you need to get on with it. Once you've started doing all the above, it'll become habit. So go for it!

A: From a business point of view, there are two reasons to start a blog. One is as a marketing tool to bring exposure, credibility and clientele to an existing business - for instance, using a blog about gardening to promote a local plant nursery.

The other reason - the one you're considering - is to generate money through the blog itself. Rather than promoting a business, the blog is the business.

There certainly are some examples of blogs as successful businesses. High-profile blogs like Huffington Post and Daily Kos attract millions of readers and sell oodles of ads.

Some lesser-known blogs do well also: Steve Pavlina has a blog and Web site about personal growth called StevePavlina.com that generates more than $10,000 in ad revenue each month. And Tom Foremski publishes a blog called Silicon Valley Watcher that garners about $10,000 a month in corporate sponsorships.

But those are the exceptions. There are 103 million blogs in existence and 175,000 new ones created every day, according to Technorati, a San Francisco company that tracks blogs and offers a blog search engine.

Most of those 103 million blogs don't even try to sell ads. And those that do accept ads - most commonly through Google's AdSense program - typically make only a few dollars a month.

"A good rule of thumb would be that for every 1,000 page views, the blogger will make 50 cents," said Guy Kawasaki, co-founder of the popular blog Truemors.

"Someone starting a new blog shouldn't expect a dime from advertising," said Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas. "People should blog because they love to write about their chosen subject matter. That should be the only motivation because for 99.9999 percent of bloggers, that personal satisfaction will be all the payment they will ever see."

But you're right that a few extra bucks never hurts anyone. So let's look at the various ways to sell ads on a blog:

-- Google's AdSense. You can find these little text ads with the "Ads by Google" caption on lots of Web pages. Advertisers bid for these slots on a per-click basis, and Google splits the revenue with the blogger or Web page owner. Since it's an auction system, the cost of ads varies widely - from a few pennies per click up to $15 per click or more.

Google doesn't disclose how it splits the revenue with Web page owners. But Foremski of Silicon Valley Watcher estimated that small Web publishers probably receive about 60 percent of ad revenues while Google keeps 40 percent.

-- Blog ad networks. Some companies have created networks of independent blogs and sell packages of advertising on those blogs - for instance, a package of ads on parenting-related blogs.

Federated Media and Pajamas Media are two such companies; BlogHer is another one that focuses on blogs written by or for women. These networks typically charge on a per-view rather than a per-click basis, which may be more lucrative for many bloggers.

"We sell ads for $10 to $20 for 1,000 impressions (page views)," said Elisa Camahort, co-founder of BlogHer, which is based in Redwood City. "The average blogger gets 50 percent of that, although large bloggers get more."

-- Sell ads yourself. Some megablogs like Huffington Post have in-house advertising sales teams. There are also sites like BlogAds.com that help you sell ads yourself. But do-it-yourself ad sales is not a great idea for a new, unknown, part-time blogger like you.

What determines whether a blog receives $10 or $10,000 from ads each month?

Partly it's the number of readers. But it's also the nature of those readers. Advertisers will pay more if your blog attracts a particular audience they want to reach, such as high-tech decision-makers or new parents with lots of disposable income to spend on children's products.

"It's not so much the numbers in themselves as what they represent - in my case, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, the Silicon Valley crowd," Foremski said.

So if you're viewing this blog as a business endeavor, think about how to develop a readership that is either large or desirable to advertisers. Attracting those readers will require marketing and networking within the blogosphere. But mostly it will require a well-written and interesting blog that is updated frequently.

"Do you blog regularly in a voice that's individual? Do you participate in the community of people with similar blogs so they come to your blog?" said Camahort. "If you write with absolute authenticity about who you are, you'll find the people who will be your readers."

"The Average Joe will fail to make a living from blogging," Pavlina said. "But the Average Joe will fail at every other serious long-term endeavor anyway. If you want to succeed in blogging, you can't be average because people don't want to visit and read average blogs. Average is boring."

Keep in mind that ad sales aren't the only way to make money from a blog. Other strategies include selling merchandise, setting up affiliate relationships with online stores such as Amazon.com so you receive a percentage of sales that come through your site, and even asking readers for donations.

Google offers unified approach to interactive ads

Google said on Tuesday it is testing a new interactive service that lets advertisers measure users' responses in advanced ways using video or images on Google's vast base of affiliated Web sites.

The top provider of Web searching has been testing Google Gadget Ads, as the new service is known, as a way to deliver eye-catching ads that have the dynamism of television but also the Web interactivity that lets users choose what they see.

Some analysts and early advertisers who have tested the ads with consumers said the capacity to measure the effectiveness of so-called rich media advertising is a technology breakthrough for the industry that bolsters Google's push into the corporate brand market.

"Gadget Ads is very far reaching," said Andrew Frank, an online advertising analyst with market research firm Gartner. "This is the platform that Google is going to build all their cross-media advertising services upon," he said.

The new advertising service is designed for broad adoption across Google sites, including iGoogle personalized home pages that tens of millions of consumers use for searching and to be notified of updated information on the Web at large. The new format works across Google's network of hundreds of thousands of affiliated sites and can be embedded in YouTube videos.

Rivals like Yahoo Inc and Microsoft Corp and a host of ad start-ups offer various twists that help brand advertisers serve up rich media ads such as video, but they lack the breadth of what Google is offering, Frank said.

Gadget Ads can incorporate instantly updating data feeds, images, video and even miniature, fully functioning Web sites in a single advertising unit, using the latest mouthful of Web publishing technology terms, including Flash and AJAX.

Gadget Ads will allow advertisers to count not just whether the user clicked on a particular ad but how much consumers engage with the features of a particular ad, said Christian Oestlien, a business product manager for Google Gadget Ads.

With Google's help, advertisers can measure user behaviours like how much of a video ad was watched, whether it was viewed more than once, if a user fast-forwarded or rewound the video, and whether the menu or other controls were used.

"It is unparalleled on the Web today," Oestlien said.

The underlying technical platform lets advertisers combine different types of Web services from Google and elsewhere on the Web. Beyond delivering the ad itself, Google can also encourage customer feedback or handle on-the-spot transactions within the ad, using Google Checkout or PayPal, for example.

In another case, an automobile advertiser could combine a video advertisement for its cars with links to Google Maps, live traffic updates and a preliminary customer sign-up form.

Preliminary testers include PepsiCo's Sierra Mist, Intel, Honda Motor, Six Flags and Viacom's Paramount Vantage.

Bladimiar Norman, head of interactive marketing at Paramount Vantage, the independent film arm of Paramount Studios, said Google Gadget Ads allows him to create interactive ads for upcoming films that fans can copy and feature on their own sites, extending the ad's audience reach.

Because Gadget Ads work across both Google owned properties, Google-affiliated Web sites and non-Google sites such as social networks, Norman said he can reach a far wider audience with a single creative effort.

Instead of standard "click to play" video ads, "I am able to do things that are a little more challenging," said Norman, who promotes films like "The Kite Rider" and "Into the Wild".

Separately, Google has hired Andy Berndt, co-president of the New York office of Ogilvy & Mather, a unit of WPP Group, in a move that could prove controversial among ad agencies, who fear Google may increasingly compete with them.

Berndt will be joining Google later this year as the managing director of the Google Creative Lab, which develops Google's own advertising for business and consumer markets and works with other creative agencies in developing advertising using Google advertising services.

When you do a search and arrive at a new site, you will see a blue title bar at the top of the page, as well as a site description and large headings.

In your template, you can change the words in the "title", "description", and "h1" or "h2" tags to be whatever keywords you want to attract traffic with. These keywords will be the prominent words in your site's listings in the search engines, so use a good keyword research tool, and choose wisely!

You may decide to choose 10 or 11 good keywords for your blog, and put the most important ones, like "make money online now" in your domain, title, description, and headers, and then use the other keywords you are targeting within your blog posts. I like to focus on only one keyword per post and sprinkle it throughout the post. Overdoing it can backfire on you and appear more like a spam post that you may get penalized for, so use the general rule of no more than one keyword per paragraph, and you should be okay.

You may already know that the search engines read your site from top to bottom and left to right. This means that if you have a left column for your site, it will read from the top of that left column to the bottom of that left column before actually reading your blog post. This is quite significant to know because this means that the more blog post links you have in that left column pointing to your previous posts, the more easily the search engine spiders will pick up and index those keywords. Make sure you set up your blog template to include your blog's previous and archived posts on the left.

Don't forget to make regular daily posts, and ping your blog after each post you make. This will notify the search engines that your blog has new content to spider. If you follow these SEO blog tips, then you will get new traffic to your blog, and find that you will make money online now! Blog traffic can translate to making money if you do it right!

Google Launches AdSense for Mobile

Publishers of Web sites designed for viewing on mobile phones now have the option to make some money through Google (GOOG)'s AdSense program.

Google on Tuesday announced the availability of AdSense for Mobile, its service for placing contextual ads with mobile Web content.

"We've just launched AdSense for Mobile, which can help you expand your online content to new platforms," said Alex Kenin, AdSense product marketing manager, in a blog post. "If you have a Web site optimized for mobile browsers, or are interested in creating one, you can start monetizing your mobile site by accessing a growing number of our mobile advertisers."

AdSense for Mobile complements Google's original AdSense service, which places ads on participating publishers' sites that correspond to the publishers' content. Both versions of AdSense run on Google's auction model and AdSense publishers earning money based on the number of ads clicked on by viewers.

Google is offering AdSense for Mobile in 13 countries: England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Russia, Netherlands, Australia, India, China, and Japan (in a few weeks).

For those keeping score, that's six fewer than Yahoo (YHOO), which launched its mobile display ad system for its Mobile Web service in 19 countries back in February.

Mobile advertising is expected to generate about $3 billion by the end of the year and $19 billion by the end of 2011, according to ABI Research.

Google's ability to profit from mobile advertising will depend largely on how much it knows about those viewing its mobile ads and the extent to which it can convert that knowledge into ad targeting data.

While telecom companies typically know a great deal about their subscribers, they tend not to share that information without compensation, if at all. That leaves Google to either make deals with telecom partners or to deepen its own data about those using its services both on the Internet and mobile devices.

With almost all of Google's revenue coming from Web advertising, Google is no doubt anxious to deliver mobile ads that phone users want to see and that advertisers want to pay for. Doing so will go a long way toward diversifying Google's revenue stream, which is something that Google's investors would like to see.

Certainly, the audience is there. There are about 6.6 billion people in the world and about half that many mobile phone subscriptions, according to The Mobile World, a U.K. mobile phone consultancy. Better still, ad blocking on mobile handsets isn't an issue. At least not yet.

Almost immediately, I noticed that the ads changed, becoming more relevant, and my earnings soared.

Google won't accept every Web site. It won't, for example, place ads on sites with pornographic, gambling, and other controversial content.

Earning Money From AdSense

The amount of money that you earn from AdSense depends upon several factors, including the number of visitors to your Web site or blog and the nature of your content. Some content is more popular with advertisers, who will pay more for ad clicks. Google doesn't disclose how it splits the money it earns from advertisers with the publishers on AdSense. Google accumulates your monthly earnings and pays out after the balance exceeds $100.

I'm generally pleased with my earnings from AdSense. However, I know other Web publishers who don't believe it was worth the effort needed to enter the ad code. You risk only the investment of your time, however, so I recommend trying out AdSense to see if it earns money for you.

Over the past few days, numerous bloggers have been buzzing about BlogRush, a new widget that allows you to get "free traffic" to your blog. It works like this: users (based on referral codes and traffic) get titles of their blogs listed on similar blogs.

By adding the BlogRush Widget to a blog, a blogger can get instant distribution for their latest blog post titles across a network of related blogs.

DigitalPoint Forums members think that this can be a violation of AdSense TOS. But it's really doing nothing but displaying titles, so others disagree with that notion.

I've seen similar traffic widgets which I've also used but haven't seen much traffic increase, so I'm skeptical about this tool bringing traffic to my blog. As it is, most people I know are using full feeds and rarely take advantage of widgets on the sidebar. So, to answer Li at Cre8asite Forums, I'd be interested in seeing if there's anything more than just initial buzz. Right now, the tool does have the right kind of spokespeople behind it and this has prompted a plethora of new signups, but is there anything else?

Many of the Internet Marketers I know, who are successful in making money online, set aside a budget for traffic generation. Depending on the size of the budget you can allocate for your own traffic campaigns, there are some sneaky methods you can use to drive traffic to your site:

1. Leveraging on forum regulars' signatures

Many marketers and experts recommend that forums be used to create a buzz about your site and eventual traffic creation. But while this is free, you would have to invest massive amounts of time to establish your presence and credibility. One marketer I know went one step further - he filtered out the top forum regulars, contacted them, and made offers to monetize their forum presence. One simple way was to pay them to include a link to his site in their forum signatures. They made some money from doing what they have always done (posting), and he benefited from their credibility.

2. Align your Adwords ads to the product creator's site, if they have one

This one seems to work specifically if the creator of the products you are selling owns a blog which has Adsense ads. Target your Adwords campaigns for his products, to appear on his site. Depending on the Adsense layouts, it would appear that the Adsense ads were his own personal ads. Visitors clicking on these would then be driven to your affiliate site.

3. Contests

Alright, this is no longer little-known, but it is still sneaky in a way - as it creates a buzz, and most contest prizes offered came free to the site owners anyway. But if you do not have sponsors, you could look for any useful freebies lying around in your possession or better yet, spend a little to buy a prize. Having a contest on your site would definitely drive traffic to your site. Of course, you should plan what to do with the traffic before announcing the contest, to ensure they remain sticky after that.

4. Viral video marketing

This is widely practised, but not seen enough in Internet Marketing. The start-up costs are minimal (webcams are cheap nowadays), and by leveraging on the viral buzz it can create in video communities such as YouTube, you can create videos about your products and sites. Entertainment videos rank high in the communities, and if you can lend a comedic touch to yours, people would be tempted to check you out further. It's sneaky, and might not be as useful in the long run compared to providing more valuable content, but it sure creates traffic.

While the above methods might not be for everyone, consider if they would fit in your marketing drive and budget. If so, test them out and you might reap the same benefits as other marketers who have included them in their arsenal.

3. Failing to understand the real needs and wants of their website visitors.

The AdSense API was introduced in March as a way for sites with user generated content to share advertising revenue with their members. Counting Clicks

Given that most of Google's $13 billion in revenue comes from clicks on ads, you would think the words "click fraud" would inspire fear in Shuman Ghosemajumder, the company's senior product manager and resident click-fraud czar. But the problem--publishers who inflate pay-per-click ad fees with automatic clicking software--doesn't fluster Ghosemajumder or other Googlers.

In March 2006, as the company faced a class-action lawsuit from online advertisers for damages from fraudulent clicks, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt dismissed click fraud as "immaterial." Even after paying a $90 million settlement, Google has maintained its "everything-is-just-fine" answer to click-fraud worrywarts.

Not all outsiders are reassured. A report in July from Click Forensics, an Austin, Texas-based click-fraud auditing firm, contended that click fraud is growing, particularly on content networks like Google Adsense and Yahoo Publisher Network. The report, drawn from more than 4,000 sites' advertising data, asserted that the rate of fraudulent clicks was 15.8% in the second quarter of 2007, up 1% from three months earlier. Within online content networks, Click Forensics estimated that more than 25% of all clicks were fraudulent, up from about 22% percent in the previous quarter.

Ghosemajumder doesn't buy it. He spoke with Forbes.com about why some third-party auditors overestimate malicious clicks, the myth that Google profits from click fraud and just how the company can reassure advertisers without giving away the secrets of its click-fraud detection.

Forbes.com: Click Forensics reports that click fraud is increasing--you disagree. Why?

Shuman Ghosemajumder: The big problem with third-party auditors is that they continue to count "fictitious clicks," clicks that Google doesn't count as clicks at all, in click fraud estimates. Here's one major example: Users click on a Google ad on Google.com or an Adsense site. When they land on the advertiser's site, they click on products, hitting the "back" button to go back to the landing page. Many browsers reload the landing page each time. We don't count those as clicks, but third-party auditors actually register each click on the "back" button as another click on an ad, which grossly overestimates the number of ad clicks.

The other important point is that auditors like Click Forensics estimate the amount of click fraud that's being attempted, not how much is going undetected and is charged to advertisers. That means they're counting the clicks that we throw away as invalid, not just the ones advertisers pay for.

But click-fraud auditors argue that there's a discrepancy: They say you throw away no more than 10% of clicks, while they estimate click fraud rates at as much as 25%.

That's just one particular set of numbers. The auditing firm, Fair Isaac, for example, estimated in May that on Google's content network, 10 to 15% of clicks are fraudulent. On ads placed next to search results, they said that there was a negligible rate of click fraud, less than 1%. That implies an overall click-fraud rate of around five to 7%. The number of clicks that we proactively throw out is less than 10%. So then the question is really: How much are advertisers getting for free thanks to our detection methods?

Most auditors have realized this is very difficult to do from the point of view of a third party and have changed their business model to focus on other kinds of analytics. Click Forensics is one company that has continued to publish numbers, but I don't hear much about them anymore. You need a lot of data to do any sort of statistical analysis, and auditors don't have nearly as much as we do.

What data do you see that third-party auditors don't?

The primary data set that third parties don't have access to is the impression data--not just when the ads are clicked, but how often they're viewed. A very simplistic fraudster might just click on ads, over and over. But of course, we've learned to recognize spikes in the click-through rate, the number of times the ad is clicked on for every time it appears. Any sophisticated fraudster has to keep their click-through rates at a reasonable percentage by creating the right number of false impressions.

From a third-party perspective, you can't even see the click-through rate. Since we know exactly how many times an ad appears, we have much more data than the third-party auditors for any given advertiser.

Have you seen an increase in click fraud in recent months?

It's difficult to say. We filter out fewer than 10% of clicks as invalid, but you can't draw a very precise line between malicious activity and invalid clicks that might have been made with malicious intent. Anyone spending time looking at the percentage changes in something where you can't draw a precise line doesn't understand the issue.

One metric we do have is the number of cases in which we refund advertisers for click fraud, and that has remained stable at less than .02%, quarter after quarter.

Some have accused Google of turning a blind eye to click fraud or underestimating the problem because of the revenue it generates. Is Google really motivated to stop click fraud?

That’s one of the biggest misunderstandings about this. We have a very direct financial incentive to detect bad publishers--the ones engaged in click fraud--and remove them from the system.

Google is also a publisher itself. When we display ads on Google.com, we get 100% of the revenue for those ads. When you have bad publishers introduced into the system, the effect is to reduce advertisers' return on investment, because they cost money and don't generate sales. When you reduce [return on investment (ROI)], the rational thing for advertisers to do is to pay less for clicks. That doesn't just mean that the clicks that go through our good publishers' sites make less money. It also means the clicks on Google.com make less money for us.

That incentive for us to stop click fraud is actually part of a broader incentive: We're trying to create the greatest ROI possible for advertisers. That's what makes us the most competitive in terms of attracting advertisers and competitors. We wouldn't invest a lot of money improving ROI in one respect, and then let it degrade in another.

Has Google's approach to click fraud changed since its $90 million settlement with advertisers last year?

We weren't required by the settlement terms to change anything. But we did have a third-party analyst, Alexander Tuzhilin, come in and spend time with the click-quality team. He wrote a report that concluded our approach was reasonable. We've felt we've done a very effective job of protecting advertisers, even though we have fraudsters constantly trying new angles of attack.

Are you investigating and taking legal action against particularly egregious cases of click fraud?

We are trying to do that more, and we're looking at a few cases at the moment. But I'm afraid I can't talk about them.

What are the giveaways that make click-fraud detectable?

There aren't any silver bullets. There are some very simple things, like watching the click-through rate. It's easy to catch someone who clicks a million times in a minute. But we also have anomaly detection that allows us to spot more sophisticated kinds of click fraud.

We monitor signals like Internet protocol addresses and the kinds of browsers people use--for traffic to look real, it has to have the right proportion of visitors using the Firefox browser, Internet Explorer, et. cetera. But the real power of our detection systems lies in the fact that we analyze hundreds of different factors, the majority of which are secret.

Does that mean that Google faces a transparency dilemma? You can't reveal these metrics because they'd help people get away with click fraud. But if you reveal too little, advertisers will have a hard time believing that you're really capable of stopping the problem.

We can't talk about these things in detail, but we talk about them at a high level. We try to promote as much understanding of these issues as we can in forums, blogs and academic articles. And we're the only search engine to have had a third-party come in and publish a report.

What advertisers can see and what they're constantly giving us feedback about are the actual results from their ad campaigns. The metric we really compete on is our advertisers' return on investment.

Some critics have also accused Google of unfairly banning innocent publishers accused of click fraud. Does that happen?

We do take it very seriously. We have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to click fraud from publishers.

But when it comes to accounts that have been wrongly terminated or sabotaged, we're always monitoring that too, and it generally comes to a very low number. We never hear back from the vast majority of publishers terminated. When publishers say they weren't engaged in click fraud, we have an appeals process.

But more generally, it's a good sign that we're being criticized by both advertisers and publishers for opposite reasons. That means we must be doing something right.

Google Inc.'s AdSense advertising program will appear on CNN.com, the two companies said Tuesday.
Atlanta-based CNN.com and Mountain View-based Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) said the agreement calls for the AdSense program to place "contextually relevant" ads alongside CNN.com content.

Under the terms of the deal, Google will serve as the exclusive provider of auction-based text advertisements throughout CNN.com.

YouTube is Now 35% of Users--Watch Those Profit Margins

According to JMP Securities analyst William Morrison's analysis of Comscore data, Google continues to gobble up global market share at a fantastic rate. From July06 to July 07:

Even more startling: YouTube now accounts for 28% of total minutes spent on Google worldwide and an astounding 35% of global users. This bodes well for Google's continued video dominance, but it also suggests the company's overall profit margins are likely to continue to decline significantly.

As described here, YouTube's profit margins are likely to be vastly lower than those in Google's core business (and even in the AdSense business). Although profit dollars are more important than profit margins, declining margins are generally hell on stock prices. The bigger YouTube gets as a percentage of users and minutes, the more Google's profit per user/minute is likely to drop. This could create a major headwind for the stock.

Google has introduced a new feature allowing AdSense publishers to choose which websites their code will work on, the search engine reveals.

An Inside AdSense blog post explains that some publishers were concerned their code could appear on fraudulent websites, resulting in them being banned from the service.

Now they are given the option of defining a list of "allowed sites" to ensure advertisements only appear on pages belonging to the account holder.

"Sites that aren't on your list can still display ads using your ad code," notes Julie Beckmann of AdSense Publisher Support.

"However, impressions and clicks for these sites won't appear in your reports, advertisers won't be charged and you won't receive any earnings from them."

She adds that if no allowed sites are defined, advertisements will continue to appear as normal with the same risk of fraudulent activity being blamed on the publisher.

Google recently enhanced its Website Optimiser software to allow multiple versions of a landing page to be automatically compared to determine which achieves the greatest conversion rate.

Certain locations tend to be more successful than others. This "heat map" illustrates these ideal placements on a sample page layout. The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance). All other things being equal, ad placements above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold. Ads placed near rich content and navigational aids usually do well because users are focused on those areas of a page.

While this heat map is useful as a positioning guideline, we strongly recommend putting your users first when deciding on ad placement. Think about their behavior on different pages, and what will be most useful and visible to them. You'll find that the most optimal ad position isn't always what you expect on certain pages.

For example, on pages where users are typically focused on reading an article, ads placed directly below the end of the editorial content tend to perform very well. It's almost as if users finish reading and ask themselves, "What can I do next?" Precisely targeted ads can answer that question for them.
